Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzungen und -kontrolle
- 1/30If riding in urban areas
Motorcycles and mopeds must not exceed 50 km/h in built-up areas.
If riding on rural roads
Motorcycles may travel up to 100 km/h on rural roads unless a lower limit is posted.
If riding on expressways (Schnellstraße)
The speed limit for motorcycles on expressways is 100 km/h unless signs show otherwise.
If riding on motorways (Autobahn)
Motorcycles may travel at up to 130 km/h on motorways if weather and road conditions permit.
If riding a moped (AM licence)
Mopeds must not exceed 45 km/h on any road type.
If road signs show lower limits
Posted speed limits override general limits and may be under 50–130 km/h.
If riding in rain
In wet conditions, reduce speed below the posted 50–130 km/h range for safety.
If riding in fog
Fog requires slowing below posted limits, even under 50 km/h if visibility is reduced.
If riding in snow or on icy roads
Slippery roads require speeds much lower than posted limits.
If visibility is under 50 meters
When visibility drops below 50 m, riders must not exceed 50 km/h.
If using winter tyres with lower rating
Some winter tyres restrict motorcycles to a max of 80 km/h.
If motorway minimum speed is required
Motorway riders must maintain at least 60 km/h unless conditions prevent it.
If riding a moped on motorway
Mopeds are banned from motorways regardless of speed capability.
If riding a low-powered motorcycle
Motorcycles under certain power limits are not allowed on motorways.
If overtaking in rural areas
Overtaking must not exceed the rural limit of 100 km/h.
If overtaking on expressways
Overtaking must be done without exceeding 100 km/h.
If overtaking on motorways
Overtaking on motorways must not exceed 130 km/h.
If road is winding or narrow
Curves require lowering speed from the legal limit to maintain control.
If approaching a school zone
In school zones, limits are often reduced to 30–50 km/h.
If approaching pedestrian crossings
Slow to a safe speed, often under 50 km/h, when approaching crossings.
If approaching roadworks
Temporary limits in work zones often lower speeds to 30–50 km/h.
If approaching a tunnel
Tunnel limits may range from 80–100 km/h for motorcycles.
If road surface is damaged
Potholes or gravel may require slowing from 50–130 km/h to a safe speed.
If carrying a passenger
Carrying extra weight may require lowering speed below 50–130 km/h.
If tyres are worn or underinflated
Poor tyre condition may require riding below the legal limit.
If strong crosswinds occur
High winds can make it unsafe to ride at 100–130 km/h.
If traffic is dense
Congested traffic requires slower riding than the maximum allowed.
If braking distance is reduced
Reduced stopping distance in wet or icy weather means slowing below 50–130 km/h.
If approaching sharp bends
Sharp turns require slowing below 50–130 km/h depending on road type.
If unsure of the speed limit
When uncertain, follow the safest rule — often 50 km/h in urban areas.
