All riders and passengers must wear a certified helmet that meets Austrian/EU safety standards.
When carrying a passenger on a motorcycle
Pillion passengers are legally required to wear a certified helmet at all times.
If operating a moped or motorcycle
Riders must hold the appropriate category licence (AM, A1, A2, or A) depending on engine power and age.
If riding without the correct licence
Operating a motorcycle without the correct category licence is illegal and subject to penalties.
When riding in Austria
All motorcycles and mopeds must be insured, and proof of insurance must be shown when requested.
If unable to show insurance proof
Riders must carry insurance documents or risk penalties for non-compliance.
If riding a registered motorcycle
Riders must carry official registration papers while operating the motorcycle.
When riding on public roads
All motorcycles and mopeds must display a valid, clearly visible number plate.
If using a motorcycle
Lights, horn, two mirrors, approved tyres, and brakes must be in good working condition.
If carrying a passenger
A motorcycle may carry a passenger only if it has a designated passenger seat and footrests.
If exhaust is modified beyond limits
Tampering with exhaust to increase noise or performance is prohibited.
When riding a motorcycle
Riders must ensure their vehicles comply with Austria’s noise emission standards.
If modifying a motorcycle
Engine, lighting, or exhaust changes must stay within approved limits.
When riding
Motorcycles must be equipped with a functional speedometer for monitoring speed.
If brake lights are faulty
All motorcycles must have working brake lights for safety.
When turn indicators are faulty
Motorcycles must have fully functional turn indicators.
If road markings designate lanes
Riders must use correct lanes unless signs allow exceptions.
If riding in restricted lane
Motorcycle riders may only use lanes designated for their use or where exceptions apply.
When riding in Austria
Motorcycles must have dipped headlights on at all times for visibility.
If riding without lights
Not using required lighting reduces visibility and breaches Austrian traffic law.
If using a mobile phone while riding
Riders must not use handheld phones; hands-free devices are allowed.
If caught using phone by hand
Using a handheld phone while operating a motorcycle is punishable by penalties.
If parking a motorcycle
Motorcycles must be parked in marked zones and not on footpaths or bicycle lanes.
If parked on footpath or cycle lane
Parking in prohibited areas can lead to fines and possible towing.
When riding
Gloves, jackets, and boots provide extra safety and are sometimes legally required.
If riding without protective clothing
Not wearing protective gear greatly increases risk in case of accidents.
If motorcycle lacks required safety parts
Missing mirrors, lights, horn, or brakes makes the vehicle unroadworthy.
When selling a motorcycle
Vehicles must comply with all regulations before transfer of ownership.
If stopped by police
Riders must cooperate by presenting licence, insurance, and registration on request.
If refusing a police inspection
Denying a lawful inspection can result in penalties and possible seizure of the motorcycle.
