Licensing and Insurance

Mopeds with up to 50 cc engine capacity and max 45 km/h require an AM licence in Austria.
If applying for AM licence
Riders must be at least 15 years old to obtain an AM moped licence.
If riding a 125 cc motorcycle
Light motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW require an A1 licence.
If applying for A1 licence
Riders must be at least 16 years old to obtain an A1 motorcycle licence.
If riding a motorcycle up to 35 kW
Medium-power motorcycles up to 35 kW require an A2 licence.
If applying for A2 licence
Riders must be at least 18 years old to obtain an A2 licence.
If riding a motorcycle without power limit
All motorcycles, regardless of power, require an A licence.
If applying for A licence via direct access
Direct access to full A licence requires riders to be at least 24 years old.
If upgrading from A2 to A licence
Progressive access to A licence is allowed at 20 if rider has 2 years of A2 experience.
If taking moped training
Riders must complete both theoretical and practical training before AM exam.
If upgrading licence progressively
Progressive access from A1 → A2 → A is allowed if all legal requirements are met.
If applying for any motorcycle licence
All categories require a medical check for vision and physical health.
If renewing motorcycle licence
Licence renewal can require a repeat medical fitness assessment.
If operating a motorcycle
All powered two-wheelers must have valid liability insurance to be legally operated.
If motorcycle is uninsured
Without valid insurance, the motorcycle or moped cannot be registered in Austria.
If riding in Austria
Riders must have insurance proof on them while riding.
If stopped by police
Police can request proof at any time during roadside checks.
If riding without valid insurance
Riding uninsured can lead to heavy fines and vehicle impoundment.
If registering a motorcycle
Registration requires proof of liability insurance.
If riding a moped or motorcycle
All riders and passengers must wear a helmet at all times.
If passenger not wearing helmet
Riders are responsible for ensuring passengers also wear helmets.
If riding without helmet
Operating a motorcycle or moped without a helmet violates Austrian traffic law.
If buying a used motorcycle
Transfers require all documents and proof of insurance.
If owning a motorcycle for years
Certain motorcycles require periodic technical inspections based on age/registration.
If inspection reveals faults
Faults found during inspection must be fixed before the bike is road legal.
If licence expired
Expired licences cannot be used to operate a motorcycle or moped.
If learner rider
Learners must follow specific restrictions for their licence category.
If renting a motorcycle
Rental companies require proof of eligibility and coverage.
If importing a motorcycle
Imported bikes must be registered and insured before use on public roads.
